A Rigorous Asymptotic Perspective on the Large Scale Simulations of Turbulent Premixed Flames
نویسندگان
چکیده
An idealized model for turbulent premixed flames is introduced. It consists of a scalar advection-reaction-diffusion equation that describes the interaction of a thin flame with a turbulentlike flow field acting on two separate scales. Rigorous asymptotic results as well as affordable and reliable direct numerical simulations are available to predict the effective large scale behavior of the idealized front. This framework is used as part of a strategy to validate a modeling approach for the large scale simulations of turbulent premixed flame fronts. The relevance to practical computations is demonstrated by addressing three important issues regarding closure models for more realistic turbulent flames: scaling regimes in the parameterization of the flame speed; relationship between the front at large scales and the resolved reaction zone in a direct simulation; accuracy and efficiency of the large scale flamelet approach.

متن کاملEffects of Small-Scale Turbulence on NOx Formation in Premixed Flame Fronts
Abstract A flamelet-based approach that accounts for turbulence-chemistry interaction has been formulated to simulate NOx formation in turbulent lean premixed combustion. In the simulations, the species NO is transported and solved with the chemical source term being modelled through its formation in flame fronts and its formation rate in post-flame regions. The flame-front NO and post-flame NO...
متن کاملAn elementary model for the validation of flamelet approximations in non-premixed turbulent combustion
The fundamental soundness of three flamelet models for non-premixed turbulent combustion is examined on the basis of their performance in an idealized model problem that merges ideas from the laminar asymptotic theory for non-premixed flames and rigorous homogenization theory for the diffusion of a passive scalar. The overall flame configuration is stabilized by a mean gradient in the passive s...

The Stochastic Fields approach is an attractive way to implement transported Probability Density Function modelling into Large Eddy Simulations of turbulent combustion. In premixed combustion LES, the numerical grid shoul...
متن کاملNumerical analysis of reaction-diffusion effects on species mixing rates in turbulent premixed methane-air
The scalar mixing time scale, a key quantity in many turbulent combustion models, is investigated for reactive scalars in premixed combustion. Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of three-dimensional, turbulent Bunsen flames with reduced methane-air chemistry have been analyzed in the thin reaction zones regime. Previous conclusions from single step chemistry DNS studies are confirmed regarding ...
